MEDIA RELEASE
THE ST. LOUIS CHILDREN’S CHOIRS’ NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR,
DR. ALYSON MOORE, BEGINS HER TENURE
Only the fourth director in the choirs’ celebrated history
ST. LOUIS (August 7, 2022) – Dr. Alyson Moore of Fresno, CA, has arrived in St. Louis to begin her tenure as the next Artistic Director of the internationally-acclaimed St. Louis Children’s Choirs (SLCC or the Choirs). Moore is the fourth artistic director in the organization’s 45-year celebrated history and assumes the position for the 2023-24 performance season that begins later this month.
“I am honored to have been selected as the next Artistic Director for the The St. Louis Children’s Choirs. Under Mrs. Berner's exceptional direction, the Choirs have provided rich musical experiences for children in St. Louis and I am excited to carry the SLCC mission and vision forward to the future!” said Moore.
Dr. Moore is a scholar, choral educator, and a lyric soprano who earned her doctorate in vocal performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2010. While serving as the Director of Arts at The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland, her choirs performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, The U.S. State Department, and The Blair House. Alyson’s choirs performed at the International Kodaly Symposium in Budapest and Kecskemet, Hungary in 2013.
In addition to her work as a regional choral clinician and adjudicator, Alyson is the founder of the American Kodaly Children’s Chorus in Baltimore, where she served as Artistic Director for seven years. Alyson is both a musical theater performer and director and is the director of choirs at University High School in Fresno. She is on the voice faculty at Fresno Pacific University and serves as Artistic Director for the Fresno Choral Artists.
“Dr. Moore has an exceptional background and a passion for teaching young people, loves our mission of character development and musical excellence, and aligns with the Choirs’ values - I am thrilled to have passed the baton to her,” Barbara Berner, the outgoing Artistic Director, said. Berner was celebrated at the 45th Anniversary Gala in May
and at the Choirs’ 45th Anniversary Concert on April 22 at Powell Hall as each ensemble premiered a new world premiere choral work commissioned just for them.
The St. Louis Children’s Choirs is composed of seven ensembles that total 325 to 400 students annually ranging in age from 6 to 18. The diverse student body comes from over 100 school districts in 55 different zip codes in Missouri and Illinois.
Since the 1980’s SLCC has served as the official children’s choir of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with the young artists performing in over 125 SLSO performances. Other St. Louis collaborations include the Bach Society, the Ambassadors of Harmony, Opera Theatre, St. Louis African Chorus, and more.
Chris Koo, SLCC Board President, has high praise for Dr. Moore and anticipates a smooth transition and exciting future for the Choirs. “The St. Louis Children’s Choirs will continue to offer exceptional musical training experiences to hundreds of children each year and will continue to be a vital part of our city's artistic community. We believe we have found the perfect artistic leader to take the Choirs forward to its next 25 years of musical excellence.”
The Choirs’ offices are located at 2842 N. Ballas Road, St. Louis. More information is available at the Choirs’ website www.slccsing.org or by calling 314-993-9626.
