Briefing by Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), on the situation in Libya.
----------------------
Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), updated the Security Council on investigations into alleged war crimes in Libya, calling for international support to enforce arrest warrants of “six individuals from the Al Kaniyat armed groups” that according to Khan are responsible for “many Rome Statute crimes committed in Tarhunah.”
Khan highlighted crimes such as murder, torture, sexual violence, and rape, uncovered through independent investigations and cooperation with Libyan authorities.
Khan stressed the importance of executing the ICC’s judicial orders, stating, “Through the tracking activities of my office, through the liaison with the Attorney General's Office, we have identified a number of those individuals subject to the warrants of arrest. We know where they are. What we need, and the victims want, is your assistance to ensure that the judicial orders of the International Criminal Court, the orders of the Pre-Trial Chamber, are executed.”
He also announced a new mechanism proposed by Libya's Attorney General to bolster collaboration between national and international authorities. “This will embrace other national bodies and other authorities relevant to the fight against impunity in Libya,” Khan said.
