When country football star Macarthy is hilariously "abducted" to the big city to play for South Melbourne, he has trouble adjusting to his new life. After he unintentionally starts a fight during a public rally of the Melbourne Nazi Party, the club is furious at the bad publicity their new recruit has brought them. Can Macarthy redeem himself in the eyes of his team-mates, coach and club president?
A brief clip from the 1975 Australian comedy film, The Great Macarthy, starring John Jarratt as the naive country football star and Barry Humphries as the ruthless big city club president, along with a host of cameo performances by Melbourne sporting identities such as Lou Richards, Jack Dyer and Uncle Doug Elliot.
This clip features game footage of the South Melbourne Swans and the Fitzroy Lions filmed at the Junction Oval during Round 16, Saturday 20th July 1974. The John Jarratt look-alike playing for South Melbourne (number 39) is Gary Scott, who did not play senior football in 1974. Scott's scenes could only have been filmed during the Reserves game.
Also notable are the costumes used during John Jarratt's on-field scenes. The Fitzroy jumpers are a strange hybrid of Carlton design and Fitzroy colour (jump to 1:15).
For the record, the Seniors game was won by the Swans -
South Melbourne - 19.19.133
Fitzroy - 10.13.73
Ian Thomson and Stewart Gull both kicked 5 goals for the Swans. For the Lions, David Wall kicked 3 goals and Doug Searl kicked 2.
Attendance - 8110 at the Junction Oval.
