Project Marlin, Boil-off gas re-liquefaction plants, Customer M-LNG (Petronas)

At the end of 2012, Malaysia LNG, a subsidiary of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, placed an engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract with Linde Engineering for the world’s largest boil-off gas reliquefaction plant. The facility has the capacity to produce almost 0.8 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year.

The facility was built in the middle of the world’s second largest LNG complex in the town of Bintulu, on the west coast of Borneo. One of the technical highlights of the project was an innovative concept that Linde developed in the FEED phase of the project. The process has now been registered for patent approval.

This concept enables identical gas turbines to be used for boil-off gas compression and also for the cooling cycle. These gas turbines can use the nitrogen-rich flash gas as fuel. This was the first time that a gas turbine was used to drive a boil-off gas compressor, and it was an immediate success. At the heart of the facility is a 40-metre long, 154-tonne heavy coil-wound heat exchanger that was delivered on schedule by Linde Schalchen.
