This is one of the best estate sale I’ve ever been to... I visited the estate of The Widow Modine Murphy (Gary Holley), a legendary Austin drag performer. What followed was a fever dream of 1980s sequin pieces, vintage hats, brooches, costumes, a hoop skirt?!... Ah.
But this wasn’t just a fever dream—it was legacy. Gary Holley helped found The Austin Babtist Women, a group that raised money for HIV/AIDS organizations at the height of the crisis. He also played a major role in starting the Texas Gay Rodeo Association. What an amazing and fun person. It is an honor to be the current caretaker to some of his collection.
And as if the universe was winking at me—the day before I went back for round two, I found a photo of my great-grandfather... IN DRAG, dressed up for a fundraiser decades ago! A full-circle moment if I’ve ever had one.🖤
