The Stanley Bailey No. 5 hand plane, often called the "Jack Plane," has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. It was first introduced as part of the Bailey line of planes, named after Leonard Bailey, a prominent inventor and toolmaker. The No. 5 plane is known for its versatility and is commonly used for rough and fine woodworking tasks.

Stanley Works, the company behind these planes, was founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843 in New Britain, Connecticut. Over the years, Stanley expanded its operations and began producing tools in various locations, including Canada. The Canadian-made Stanley Bailey planes are highly regarded for their quality and craftsmanship.
