Doctors' ARCH is working to raise awareness of the unacceptably high preterm and newborn mortality in Karamoja and mobilize global and national support (funding + partnerships) to strengthen newborn survival.
Karamoja’s perinatal deaths average nearly 550 babies a year, including 160 neonates; many preventable.
As a strategic and lasting solution, Doctors' ARCH is calling for the establishment of: a 40-bed maternal waiting home at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, to house ~1900 high-risk mothers annually near skilled care before labor; a thermal referral chain (warm newborn transportation equipment for ten high volume Health facilities in the region) protecting about 2,500 referred newborns; and a village health worker-driven, and data-anchored digital registry over tracking 3,500 pregnancies and 8,600 newborns; directly benefiting some 12,000 women and children each year while strengthening health systems for over 460,000 people in the region.
