In August of 2022 my sister and I spent three days and hiked across Italy. This was a very tough hike and my sister was a trooper!
The first leg from Soverato is an 8 mile hike. This hike was very demanding. It had some good views, but there is really nothing else to recommend it. The hike is a very long, very hot climb up a paved road. We should have had 4 liters of water each. We hadn't taken enough and would have ended up turning around except some firefighters stopped and gave us each an additional liter. And we went without for the last couple of miles. During our hike an airplane and helicopter were taking water out of the sea and dropping it on the fire. We got to see it very close, there were still smouldering logs right next to the road, it was not closed.
The middle portion of the hike is the longest segment of the Calabria/Kalabria Coast to Coast hike at 15 miles. This portion of the trail was mostly paved roads with absolutely no traffic. It was a long hot hike, but there were several places to get water, so a couple of liters each should be plenty to get you through. This was a nicer hike than the first section out of Soverato..
The last segment of the trip, ending in Pizzo, was the nicest of the three hikes that make up the Calabria/Kalabria Coast to Coast trail. This trail has many of the virtues you expect from a trail like this, with some really nice trails, good views, etc. The literature says there is no water along the way, but you can buy bottled water at an agriturismo site just about halfway. It is one of the gates in the "oasis" (wildlife refuge?) and they give you codes for the gate along with the other codes you need to be able to pass through the oasis. You have to register online to be able to get through the gates in this section of the hike. Each section has its own steep parts, and they are generally pretty darn steep! No technical challenges, the route is generally well marked, but it is a conditioning changer for sure.
