Max & Billy have a platonic, bro and sis relationship here. (I can't believe I have to clarify this.) Warning for pedophilia implications from Neil and depictions of abuse.

As they live in Hawkins together, Max and Billy both grow the hell up. Billy cools down on his abuse, and becomes more of the protective, big stepbrother he ought to be. (The black and white segments are the past.) Max grows and experiments with her femininity; three years pass and at sixteen, she's living life to the fullest along with Billy and her family. Billy has since graduated Hawkins, but lives at home, still subjected to Neil's abuse and staying to keep her safe from him. However, now that Max's older, Neil shows even more undesirable tendencies when Billy and Susan are away. Max cuts her hair after she's tainted with him. Fast forward to when Max fights back against Neil, and just in the nick of time, Billy arrives and beats the shit out of Neil, but gets himself roughed up in the process.
