Artists often tell me there struggle to decide between expensive artist quality paint & lesser quality student paint, but something people don’t discuss enough is that you can buy oil paints second hand, & this can be a great way to buy quality professional artist paints on a budget.

Oil paints are one of the longest lasting artist materials - they can be used 50+years. I often hear from artists who use paints passed down to them from their grandparents.

I really believe in quality over quantity. A small palette of high quality paints is how I would start if I was a student again but I get that not everyone has that option & of course cheap paints are better than no paints - but before u give up look on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji etc & look for any local art material trades or sales - you may even strike gold at a garage sale.

Just a note when you buy older paint you should watch for any paints that contain disused pigments for example lead white. Also if oil paints smell that means they have gone rancid.
