Devils Tower in Wyoming is about a one hour and fifteen minute drive from Sturgis, South Dakota. If you're out there for the bike rally, this is a must do. We headed out early Saturday morning. The weather was perfect and we got there before the crowds.
Devils Tower is the nation's first National Monument designated in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. It's a popular rock climbing destination, first climbed in 1894. About 5000 per year climb Devils Tower, and we saw several climbers when we were there.
In October 1941, two months before the U.S. would enter World War II following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a man named George Hopkins parachuted onto the top of Devils Tower to win a $50 bet and was stranded there for 6 days when the tools he planned to use to descend fell over the side.
Our visit was a little less exciting than George's, but we hiked the trail at the base of Devils Tower which took about an hour and a half with stops to take pictures and video. The nice thing about walking all the way around is that on a sunny morning you can eventually find the perfect lighting for your pictures. I highly recommend a visit to this unique national treasure!

We have lots more from Sturgis and the beautiful Black Hills coming up!
