Here's a repeating sequence of dominant chords that follows the circle of fifths. Practice your scales, memorise your guide tones, explore upper extensions... and here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Use the major pentatonic scale starting on the root of each chord.
Each time the chord changes, you’ll need to change a single note for the next pentatonic scale. Try working it out in your head!
2. Add the flat 7th to the pentatonic scale, and focus on the way the 3rd of one chord falls a semitone to the 7th of the next—and vice versa. This is voice leading, a super-useful way to create flowing phrases across the chord change.
3. Play the arpeggio of each chord; then, when you’re comfortable with that, replace the root with the 9th.
Aiming for the upper extensions of a chord will help you to create more colourful and dynamic melodies.
4. Whatever you play, think about the timing. The placement of your notes on a grid of eighths should be purposeful. Leave rests, let your rhythms breathe, and remember to contribute to the beat...
