On board the Nozomi N700 Shinkansen「のぞみ　N７００ 新幹線」@270km/h

This video is a passenger's view of a return-trip from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Nozomi N700 Shinkansen.

The Shinkansens (新幹線) continue to fascinate me although I have been on a number of them since I moved to Japan: the speed (obviously!), the impeccable safety record (no accidents!), the punctuality record, the comfort of the ride... a trip on a Shinkansen is, on its own, a very interesting experience; and more so for those who like travelling on the railways.

The train is very stable, aerodynamically, at speeds around 300 km per hour. Most of this video is filmed outside the main passenger car, close to the washroom area. That is where one can hear the rumbling of the wheels a lot more than inside the passenger car. There are many types of Shinkansens in Japan. The Hayabusa E5 is the fastest and the most high-tech on the Aomori route from Tokyo. The Nozomi N700 has been popular and is the fastest on the Tokaido (Tokyo-Osaka) route.

So, when I started off for my very short trip to Kyoto to see autumn flowers ('momiji' or 紅葉, in Japanese), I decided to document it. This is on board the Nozomi N700 Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto, and back! For those outside Japan wondering about high speed rail transport, here's a journey on the state-of-the-art Japanese train.
