Agriculture has always been the backbone of Uganda’s economy, employing the majority of our people and sustaining millions of households. As we look toward building a New Uganda—one that is prosperous, inclusive, and self-reliant—agriculture and food security must take center stage. A nation that feeds itself builds strength, dignity, and lasting development.
Agriculture as the Foundation of National Development
No country has achieved sustainable development without first securing its food systems. Agriculture provides raw materials for industries, creates employment for youth and women, and generates income for families. For Uganda, investing in agriculture is not a choice—it is a necessity.
A strong agricultural sector stabilizes food prices, reduces poverty, and strengthens rural economies, which in turn supports national growth.
Food Security Is National Security
Food security means that every Ugandan has access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food at all times. Hunger weakens communities, increases dependency, and fuels social instability. When farmers are supported to produce enough food, the nation becomes stronger and more resilient.
Ensuring food security protects our children, empowers households, and safeguards Uganda’s future.
Empowering Farmers for a New Uganda
Farmers are the true builders of the nation. They need:
Access to quality seeds and livestock breeds
Affordable and reliable farm inputs
Extension services and modern farming knowledge
Access to markets and fair prices
Empowered farmers produce more, earn better, and invest back into their communities.
Youth and Women at the Heart of Agricultural Transformation
Uganda’s young population is a powerful asset. Agriculture must be repositioned as a modern, profitable, and dignified business that attracts youth innovation and energy. Women, who form the majority of agricultural producers, must also be supported with land access, financing, and training.
An inclusive agricultural system ensures shared prosperity.
Climate-Smart Agriculture for Sustainability
Climate change threatens food production through droughts, floods, and unpredictable seasons. Promoting climate-smart agriculture—such as irrigation, soil conservation, tree planting, and improved breeds—ensures long-term productivity while protecting the environment.
Sustainable farming protects both the land and future generations.
Leadership, Policy, and Community Responsibility
Building a new Uganda through agriculture requires strong leadership, supportive policies, and active community participation. Government, private sector, cooperatives, and farmers must work together to strengthen agricultural systems from the grassroots to the national level.
Conclusion
Agriculture is the light that will guide Uganda toward economic independence, food security, and shared prosperity. By empowering farmers, investing in youth and women, promoting value addition, and protecting our environment, we can truly build a New Uganda—one that feeds itself and shines as a model for the region.
Development is most effective when driven by the people it serves.
