Jim Stacy, a controversial NASCAR team owner, faced a bomb threat in 1978 when a bomb was found under his car.
Stacy, who owned coal mines and had corporate offices in San Jose, California, entered NASCAR in 1977 with driver Neil Bonnett. However, by 1978, Stacy and crew chief Harry Hyde had a bitter split over money, leading to six lawsuits totaling $1.2 million. Hyde received 200,000 shares in Stacy's coal mining company, which fluctuated in value. The bomb incident, involving 10 sticks of dynamite, was defused, but its origin remained unclear, with rumors suggesting Stacy planted it to distract from legal issues.
Hyde was later instrumental in helping found Hendrick Motorsports, while Stacy bought young Dale Earnhardt’s team and sponsored multiple cars, but the bomb case remains unsolved.
