Me & Mrs. Jones meets Mike Douglas

In today’s clip, we get to see Billy Paul, best known for “Me and Mrs. Jones,” in a rare TV moment from 1977.

Billy Paul, the Philadelphia soul singer behind the 1972 No. 1 hit “Me and Mrs. Jones” and the ambitious War of the Gods album, makes a rare appearance on The Mike Douglas Show (aired July 20, 1977). Known for his blend of pop, soul, funk, and psychedelic textures, Paul stood alongside Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell as a voice of both romance and social consciousness. You wouldn’t know it today, but at his peak Billy Paul shared the spotlight with Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass as one of the era’s leading soul music sex symbols.

The Mike Douglas Show (1961–1982) was one of America’s most influential daytime talk shows, famous for mixing music, politics, and pop culture. Douglas was ahead of his time in welcoming an inclusive range of guests, from actors and politicians to jazz, R&B, and soul performers. He was among the first daytime hosts to give soul music artists national television exposure, helping introduce them to mainstream America. In doing so, Douglas played a quiet but important role in nurturing the sounds that would soon define popular music for a generation.
