ओं तारे तुत्तारे तुरे सर्व विद्या अवर्णा ये भ्ये फट स्वहा ॥
Blue-Black Tara’s mantra is the most famous of protective mantras, even destroying black magic, demons and curses, but also every day obstacles. She is the 7th of the 21 Taras in Lord Atisha’s 21 Taras.
Tara, our mother of protection, is already the most protective of Buddhist Enlightened Aspects. In her black form, as Black Tara, her protective wrath is so active that results are as quick as lightning. She is called the “Destroyer of Enemies.” Who are these enemies? Any obstacle to Enlightenment. Any Demon or doubt. Any being who threatens us. These are all the enemies. She is also the most effective against Black Magic and negative wishes or curses of others.
Although her mantra, by itself, can be a complete practice for those with Tara faith, the best practice is to Take Refuge First in Tara and the Three Jewels, then make offerings, offer her four lines of praise (ideally in Sanskrit) and then chant her mantra. To be a karmically beneficial practice you should also dedicate the merit to the benefit of all sentient beings.
