This time lapse was taken during an Evening Sky Viewing program on May 29, 2021 at the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center. As a large storm moved along the Texas and New Mexico border roughly 100 mi/ 162 km to the north, it produced powerful lightning strikes which generated electrical discharges called sprites. Sprites are brief events that are difficult to see with the unaided eye, so most went unnoticed by the crowd.
Dark skies, free from the effects of light pollution, help to see stars and faint events like sprites. Unfortunately, dark skies are becoming fewer and farther between as the use of poorly designed outdoor lights spreads. You can help protect the night sky by using better lights in your home and business. Learn more at: https://mcdonaldobservatory.org/darks...
