Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. A Baptist minister, he emerged as the leader of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Advocating nonviolence, he organized boycotts, marches, and speeches demanding racial equality. His 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington became one of the most quoted in American history. In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize. On April 4, 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Today, his birthday is observed as a U.S. national holiday.
