The story is set in the late years of Emperor Ming Yingzong Tian Shun's reign. Crown Prince Zhu Jian Shen is selecting a consort to bolster the imperial harem and searches extensively among the commoners. Thirteen-year-old girl Li Ziyun, who lost her parents and sought refuge with her uncle, despite her hardships, remains kind-hearted and optimistic. To save a sick beggar, she is publicly beaten by her aunt, but fortunately, wealthy merchant Shao Zhong comes to her rescue and takes her in. In gratitude, Li Ziyun assumes the identity of his adopted daughter, Shao Chunhua, and enters the palace as a maid. There, she befriends Bai Hanxiang, a gentle and delicate girl whose father was convicted and whose family was confiscated by the Laundry Bureau.

Later, Qing Zi enters the palace as a lady-in-waiting, while Bai Hanxiang unintentionally becomes a concubine. Qiqiao manipulates the relationship between Qing Zi and Chunhua and helps Qing Zi become a concubine... In the end, the two close friends reconcile, and a couple deeply in love finally find happiness together.
