Use "Rivnut" threaded 1/4-20 inserts for attaching tie downs in a pickup truck bed. This allows using "blind" bolts to attach D-rings. I chose D-rings with a four hole mounting plate for added strength. Rivnuts expand on the "blind side" of the drilled hole, but don't capture much surface area. I would have used "Plus Nuts" aka "Cross Nuts" if they'd been available on Amazon. These inserts expand and flatten into a "+" shape and have more holding power.
The cheap tool I used wasn't really intended for stainless steel inserts, and probably works fine with aluminum or plastic inserts. Heavy duty tools are available for 1/4-20 and larger bolts. You can also use a homemade tool for setting Rivnuts -- it's just a bolt with a couple of nuts and washers. If you have many inserts to set, it's probably worth buying the right tool. I've converted vans into mobile laboratories using a long-handled tool. It was much faster than the "bolt method", but sometimes the "bolt method" is useful when working in tight spaces. Air powered tools are even better if you're doing production work.
