Adam searches for a wildlife photograph that captures one of Matusadona’s iconic features - “The Eternal Forest” - a petrified forest on the lake shoreline.
In the decades since Lake Kariba’s formation, the Zambezi River flooded the valley and its mineral rich waters turned the woodland it replaced to stone, creating an everlasting forest. As luck would have it, the resident herd of elephants on Rhino Island walked down to the shoreline everyday to drink and bathe.
“The Eternal Forest” (sold as a limited edition photograph) captures a herd of elephants walking amongst the petrified trees. The positioning was key. Adam wanted to shoot across the water so that the sky’s colors are reflected in the foreground, creating an infinity effect. Going against typical photography rules and shooting in the midday sun, helped to capture the magical mood of the stark landscape.
Look closely to the image and you will discover a few secrets. One of our favorite memories from our time at Rhino Safari Camp was seeing a newly born hippo with its mother. You can see them recovering after the labour in the shallows of The Eternal Forest (with a crocodile lurking in the water nearby).
