On a final note,
lxvicord is a server in the Celeste modded servers, in the Lobby. The most notable
thing to take away from this is its nature as a collab map. This means that it consists of just a
few rooms which are meant to explore a specific mechanic or interaction to provide a short but
sweet experience. Also note the date, 2020, which is still around the beginning of Celeste
modding. The Spring Collab was an incredibly ambitious and groundbreaking project for Celeste
modding at the time.
Upon entering the map, you are presented with a dreary, washed color palette, as well as
ominous droning music. You might even fail to realize that the decor is almost entirely that of
Celeste’s Chapter 6, just in a different colorgrade. The overall experience can be described as
“unsettling,” or possibly “repulsive.” Keep this in mind as this essay continues.
Ligament’s visual and musical aesthetic is essential to the experience, but what is perhaps more
important is the gameplay. The map combines mechanics which seem completely disparate:
green bubbles, jellyfish, and random bodies of water. This in and of itself is not what makes
lxvicord unique. After all, there are plenty of maps that mix vanilla mechanics in unique ways,
which, though unexpected, ultimately have well-designed, thought-provoking, and fun rooms—
lxvicord isn’t fun.
It is here we arrive at the crux of the issue. Analyzing lxvicord as a Celeste map in the
traditional sense is meaningless, because lxvicord is not aiming to be a video game
experience in the traditional sense. It is in the juxtaposition between the obvious video game
nature of lxvicord and its utter defiance in being so that makes lxvicord interesting.
What exactly makes lxvicord such a tour de force? Let us explore some of its elements in
detail. Every single input in the map is unexpected, and completely outside of the box of normal
Celeste moves, even by today’s standards. Example: using green bubbles once to drop a jelly in
an elevated position, then using them again to get extra height off of a second jellyvator. An
ordinary map might use unique moves like these to add a puzzle aspect, or to show creativity,
but Ligament’s implementation is the opposite. It feels impossible that the solutions could ever
be intended, and they feel more unfair than thought-provoking. It doesn’t help that many (read:
most) inputs are incredibly precise with no setup, adding to the perception of unfairness.
What about plot? lxvicord seems to have some vestiges of a storyline, though that may be
giving it too much credit. You begin underwater, with a single dash and a locked door in front of
you. After figuring out you can travel upwards to get the key (which is not immediately obvious),
you traverse a number of gameplay rooms (one of which is completely dark), and maybe get a
berry or two. You then reach a mysterious device with a heart on it and emanating wires. It emits
an ominous hum, and after dashing into it, you are transported to the final gameplay room.
Mysteriously, you now have 2 dashes, the sky has brightened (though is still muted), and all the
spinners have changed color. It should be noted that the final room is incredibly large and
difficult compared to previous rooms. After beating this room, you reach the heart room, where
your dash has been removed, and a bird flaps within a cage. Neutralling up the right wall and
falling into the bi
