Decompensated liver disease happens when the liver becomes so damaged that it can no longer perform its normal functions. At this stage, serious symptoms begin to appear — and recognising them early is extremely important.
In this video, we explain the key warning signs of decompensated liver disease in a simple and easy-to-understand way, including:
• jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin)
• swelling of the abdomen or legs (ascites / oedema)
• confusion or sleepiness (hepatic encephalopathy)
• vomiting blood or passing black stools
• unintentional weight loss and fatigue
• increased infections
We also discuss why these symptoms develop, and why they signal that the liver is struggling to cope.
This video is for education and awareness only — if you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, please seek medical advice as soon as possible.
