Note that York Place tram stop has permanently closed with trams now terminating at West End or St Andrew Square until the Edinburgh Tram extension opens. York Place was a temporary terminus with a single platform which has to be removed to accommodate the track on the new extension.
Services on the Edinburgh Trams network all operated the full length of the route from York Place to Edinburgh Airport since the network opened in 2014 until early 2022 when services will operate West End to Edinburgh Airport for a few months then St Andrew Square until the extension towards Newhaven opens. At the time this was filmed the service frequency was every 15 minutes in each direction, however the normal frequency is trams operating about every 7-8 minutes in each direction at most times of the day.
All Edinburgh Trams services are operated by 7 section CAF built Urbos 3 trams of which there are 27 in service. The number of trams ordered for the current network which opened in 2014 is actually more than is required for the full service. This is so that when the Edinburgh Tram extension opens there will be trams already in service to operate it. The trams on the Edinburgh Trams network are the longest in Great Britain.
The current route opened in 2014 and there is currently an extension to the network currently under construction. The new extension will extend the current network east of York Place towards Newhaven. This extension was planned from the beginning and is currently due to open in 2023. Until the extension opens the Edinburgh Trams network is the smallest in Britain. Like most other tramways it is standard gauge and is fully electrified using overhead electrification. It is a low floored tram network.
Between Balgreen and Edinburgh Park the tram route runs alongside the main railway line out to the west of Edinburgh with the tramway being to the south of this line. National Rail Interchange can be made at Edinburgh Gateway and Edinburgh Park Station with National Rail ScotRail services to destinations including Glasgow and Edinburgh. National Rail interchange is also available at Haymarket with Haymarket station which has services provided by ScotRail, Avanti West Coast, Cross Country, TransPennine Express and London North Eastern Railway. St Andrew Square is a short walk from Edinburgh Waverley station which is served by the same operators as Haymarket with the addition of Caledonian Sleeper and more services than Haymarket.
