Lector by Waldorf is a powerful vocoder that contains a polyphonic synthesizer based on the legendary Waldorf sound engine. I have always enjoyed the sound of Vocoders and found them one of the best ways to add excitement and catchy sounds to tracks but have often found it hard to find one that works well in the box. Considering this, I was delighted to find that Lector was incredibly user friendly and had a wide range of applications that could quickly help you get a robotic voice or make a percussion part sound like it is from an alien world.

The Basics:
Lector is used as an insert on an audio channel in your DAW. You can take any audio material, (preferably something with an interesting rhythm or voice) and have an instance of Lector on it.

Once a Lector instance is on your channel you can decide to either use an internal carrier signal or control the pitch of the signal using midi information. I recommend playing around with a midi keyboard to get a feel for the sounds and possibilities

You can change the sound of the Vocoder with all kinds of different wave types in the oscillator and a generous selection of acoustic sounds. This will allow you to take your sounds to new places and customise them to fit your tracks well.

There is also a Sidechain option that allows you to use a signal from your own set of instruments to be blended with the audio signal.

With a wide array of effects available (including delay, overdrive and chorus) you can make your sounds become more alien and exotic

TIP: When working with voices I have found that vocoders often cause the speaking to become somewhat unintelligible. Fortunately Lector has a great way of stopping this with their Unvoiced detector. This feature allows you to add noise to the non tonal vocoder signal to increase the articulation of speech.

In conclusion, whether they are the beginner or the absolute expert, Lector is a great find and can help anyone get more creative sounds.
