During these interesting times, I intend to record some songs, that I hardly ever perform on stage. Things that I dearly like and sing to myself or my beloved ones, songs from all corners of the world. As I don't ever play them on stage, it goes without saying, that I am not pretending to play perfect versions here. It is just a way of sharing some rare pearls in my homemade version.
Here is a version of a Greek song from the beginning of the 30s, composed by Dragatsis and Ogdondakis. The version, here recorded, is in an experimental phase. I haven't sung this with other Greek musicians yet and accompanying these kind of things on violin and singing at the same time is quite a challenge. My taximi (improvised soli in makam style) are pretty far from academically correct. There is too much Romanian influence there... When I find my self playing with Greek musicians for a week or two of course, things sound much more in the style than they do now.
Once, I was lucky enough, to play for a couple of hours with Periklis Vrahnos, an incredible violin player from Thesaloniki, from who'm I'd like to learn a lot more, as soon as we meet again.
The song at hand, I discovered in the beautiful village of Agyos Lavrentios, during another jam with among others Thimios Atsakas (oud) and Gianis Dionisiou, a fantastic singer.
Ευχαριστω Γιανι!
