Raw look at child's life in poverty—how social determinants of health raise questions about future.

This is the first of two insightful films that introduce us to Donna -- at age 10, then age 23. It's a rare opportunity to see through a child’s eyes into how economic and social factors impact health and future potential. At age 10, Donna is a kid much like any other. Various Social Determinants of Health will influence her ability to grow up healthy and accomplish her goals. How do the Social Determinants of Health affect Donna's life? This video invites us to look at Donna's reality today growing up -- in small town Nova Scotia, in a family facing many challenges -- and to imagine her future.

This video is one in a series of three companion videos aimed at encouraging health professionals to think more about the Social Determinants of Health, and a Population Health approach, and how these principles can be incorporated into their work with patients. The project was initiated by our client at the former Annapolis Valley, South Shore and Southwest District Health Authorities Population Health Working Group (today, these district health authorities have merged into Nova Scotia Health).

In this series of videos focused on social determinants of health, Journeyman used a documentary filmmaker approach to gain trust and access to challenging subjects.
