This marks the first production of the play in Sydney since its premiere almost 40 years ago at the Nimrod Theatre in a production directed by John Bell and featuring Tony Sheldon, Jane Harders, Bill Conn and Robert Alexander.

INNER VOICES first brought Nowra to public attention in 1977 and vividly demonstrates his early preoccupation and the exercise of power through the imagination. Held prisoner by a cruel and oppressive system, Ivan the Sixth has been imprisoned by Catherine the Great since childhood. Never learning language or social interaction he is freed by ambitous soldiers and placed on the throne knowing only his name.

Don't Look Away has brought together a stellar ensemble and creative team to bring this unique and violent vision to life. DAMIEN STROUTHOS (Bell Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Henry V) will lead a cast that also includes ANNIE BYRON (Head Full of Love, My Name is Asher Lev), JULIAN GARNER (Arcadia, Storm Boy), EMILY GODDARD (The Lonely Wolf, Boy at the Edge of Everything), ANTHONY GOOLEY (Good Works, Of Mice and Men), NICHOLAS PAPADEMETRIOU (The House of Ramon Iglesia, Thomas Murray and the Upside Down River) and FRANCESCA SAVIGE (Shellshock, A Doll’s House).

Directed by Don't Look Away artistic director Phil Rouse , designed by Anna Gardiner and Martelle Hunt, lighting design by Sian James-Holland and sound design by Katelyn Shaw.

Don't Look Away is the only company in Australia dedicated to producing lost plays by Australian Playwrights.
