We Found a Real-Life Castle in The Sky!

Rome, Italy is such a crowded place. We've found the ideal alternative to the crowds, noise, and difficult to reach from the cruise port location of Rome. Just an hour's coach ride from the cruise port in Civitavecchia, you'll find a hidden gem in Rome's Lazio Region.

Civita di Bagnoregio, the mythical "Castle in the Sky", is a surreal gem perched on a hill, accessible only by a narrow bridge. It offers breathtaking views of the Lazio region. Known as "the town that is dying" due to erosion, this ancient citadel, nestled between Orvieto and Lake Bolsena, has Etruscan and Medieval roots. On foggy days, it appears to float in the air, a hauntingly beautiful sight. Founded by Etruscans 2,500 years ago, Civita remains a captivating place.

An earthquake in 1695 marked the beginning of Civita di Bagnoregio's decline, prompting many residents to leave due to extensive damage. Over the years, seismic activity, landslides, and erosion led to the village being nearly abandoned. Today, access to Civita requires crossing a 300-meter suspension bridge built in 1965, connecting it to Bagnoregio.

After crossing the bridge, you'll find Porta San Maria, adorned with lions clutching human heads, representing the defeated tyrants of Bagnoregio.

San Maria leads to the main square, home to the beautifully restored Romanesque church of San Donato. The Church of San Donato, built in 600, still showcases its Romanesque charm despite renovations and earthquake damage. It later adopted a Renaissance style. Inside, you'll find a wooden crucifix of the Donatello School from the 1400s and a fresco from the Pinturicchio School.

We'll take you on a tour of this isolated Medieval City, then travel to a local vineyard, winery, and restaurant, Antica Cantina Leonardi in nearby Montefiascone.

After some amazing Italian food and wine, we return to the Celebrity Ascent cruise ship for drinks at the World Class Bar, then entertainment at The Theater for the main-stage show Awaken.
