🔥 A 3‑mile mega train takes center stage at Mormon Rocks, showcasing precision Cajon Pass operations and dual horn salutes. This rare, perfectly timed back‑to‑back meet unfolds against the dramatic backdrop of towering sandstone formations, tilted and uplifted over millions of years by tectonic forces along the San Andreas Fault, above one of the West’s busiest freight lines. It’s a display of scale, dispatcher finesse, and raw power, topped off with friendly horn exchanges from both crews to Buddy and me. Captured in crisp 2160P 4K UHD, the footage brings the power and presence of these giants to life—so settle in and enjoy the ride!
🚂 Train 1 — A mountain‑railroading beast with 7 locomotives, 224 loaded well cars, nearly 3 miles of length, and extreme trailing tonnage for an eastbound intermodal.
This consist is so long it occupies multiple signal blocks simultaneously, forcing dispatchers to meter traffic with precision. Mid‑train, buried in the DPU set, is MRL 4318 (SD70ACe) — a standout catch now that BNSF has re‑acquired the Montana Rail Link lease, bringing MRL power back into the BNSF system roster.
As the head end rounds the curve, the crew throws out a clean horn salute that echoes off the sandstone walls — a perfect railfan moment amplified by the natural acoustics of the canyon.
🚂 Train 2 — Standard-Length Intermodal, Perfectly Timed
The second train is a standard Cajon Pass intermodal with 4 locomotives up front and 105 well cars in tow. Not massive, but its timing is spot-on, rolling through the curve just minutes behind the mega train and showing how precisely BNSF and UP traffic is choreographed here. The crew responds with another horn salute, giving Buddy and me a back-to-back greeting.
📍 Location: Mormon Rocks — Cajon Pass, California
Filmed beneath towering sandstone formations shaped by tectonic forces along the nearby San Andreas Fault zone. While the fault doesn’t pass directly under this spot, its gradual movement over time tilted, fractured, and revealed these striking slabs, creating one of Southern California’s most iconic railfan backdrops.
