In this astrophotography image processing tutorial, I'll show you a quick and easy way to remove gradients in your deep-sky image using Adobe Photoshop.

This method uses the "Dust and Scratches" filter in Photoshop to create a synthetic flat frame that we can then subtract from our original image.
In the example, I smooth out the background sky in my image of the Leo Triplet of Galaxies. This method works best on astrophotos where 50% or more of the neutral background sky is present.
