Welcome to the second lecture of Microbiology (Hons & General) Sem 1 at Calcutta University! In this lecture, we explore the fundamentals of microbial diversity, including:

What microbes are and why they are important?
Binomial nomenclature is the scientific system of naming organisms in which each species is given a two-part Latin name:
Genus name (first word, always capitalized)
Species name (specific epithet) (second word, always lowercase)
For example: Homo sapiens (humans), Escherichia coli (a bacterium).
👉 The name is usually italicized (or underlined when handwritten).

Different types of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Microbial classification and taxonomy.
The role of microbes in the environment and human life.
