When old ages grow old: Legacy U-Pb age data in Precambrian
research, their utility, comparability and limitations

Beginning with the pioneering work of G. R. Tilton 70 years ago, U-Pb geochronology has become an indispensable tool in Precambrian Geology. The method of U-Pb geochronology by ID-TIMS itself has evolved to a remarkable extent through enhancements in instrumentation, as well as laboratory techniques and practices. As a result, the ages of many Precambrian rocks today are pinned down by various vintages of U-Pb data with contrasting characteristics, which have been acquired over decades of geochronologic research. This incongruent age database poses new challenges in compiling geochronologic information, especially in deciphering regional magmatic or depositional histories. In this presentation, I review the comparability of legacy U-Pb ID-TIMS data and possible strategies to remedy their differences.
