The future holds tremendous promise for scientific research and breakthroughs. AI and other technologies could be truly transformative, but at the same time, dramatic cuts in federal funding and mass layoffs are putting that progress in jeopardy. Dr. Francis Collins helmed the National Institutes of Health for 12 years before he left altogether last March. I can't think of a better person to help us understand the government's role in scientific research and the impact the decline in federal support may have from cracking the code for various diseases to drug development to a scientific brain drain.
