The Cimmerians were a fierce, nomadic people of the Eurasian steppe who swept into history during the 8th and 7th centuries BCE, striking fear into the great kingdoms of the ancient Near East. Originating north of the Black Sea, they were driven south by the Scythians and erupted into Anatolia, where they plundered Phrygia, clashed with Urartu, and even threatened the mighty Assyrian Empire. Renowned as skilled horsemen and raiders, the Cimmerians left destruction in their wake, toppling kingdoms and seizing territory before gradually fading as the Scythians and other powers rose to dominance. Though their language and culture remain shrouded in mystery, their sudden appearance and violent impact left a lasting mark on the chronicles of ancient historians, who remembered them as one of the great barbarian invasions of antiquity.
