About Mawphlang Sacred Forest:
The sacred groves of the khasis are well chronicled a practise of conservation that dates hundred of years . Mawphlang Sacred Forest popularly known in khasi as Lawkyntang Mawphlang is the most famous and well preserved as per our traditional tribal system of forest conservation under the supervision of Hima Mawphlang Lyngdohship which is still practised till date.The forest is revered and. blesssed where not a twig can be removed. it was an important place for rituals hundred of yeas ago hosting coronation and sacrifices- the exact site with Monoliths formation inside it. It is the home of the Labasa, a manifestation of local deity.The forest is home to many plants and animals including rare ferns, mushrooms , rhododendrons, herbs and medicinal plants with many insects, birds and bat species. There is a walking trail for visitors who want to explore the forest , enjoy its serenity and to learn more about its history.
