Few countries arrived at Davos with as much momentum as India — marked by strong growth numbers, deepening structural reforms, and intense curiosity from global investors. Yet, despite this positive trajectory, India now finds itself at a critical crossroads. Sustaining this rise will require difficult policy choices and much faster execution. This challenge was at the heart of a special session developed in collaboration with the India Today Group and moderated by Group Vice-Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief Kalli Purie. The discussion brought together leading economists, CEOs, and policymakers to assess what India must do next to maintain its growth story. Gita Gopinath, the Indian-American economist and Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics at Harvard University, opened the conversation by acknowledging the significant progress India has already made. “The digital infrastructure build-out has been impressive,” she said. “What India has done with the Goods and Services Tax, including the recent simplifications, has been extremely helpful.” Kalli Purie then posed one of the session’s central questions: What must India do to keep this momentum going? Gopinath’s response was direct and candid. “To sustain this momentum, continue raising capital income, and ultimately reach the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 — that is the real challenge,” she said. She also highlighted that India is starting from a position of strength. “Not only is growth strong, but inflation is also under control, remaining in the low single-digit range. That places India in a very good position today,” Gopinath added.
