Travel Japan: Walk with us through Nishinari, the Osaka neighborhood long labeled Japan’s “biggest slum.”
At Triangle Park—the center of the slum, once a day-labor hub where tens of thousands gathered each morning—we meet residents, volunteers, and shop workers who share candid stories: job loss, violence, welfare, and also compassion—like free takoyaki for anyone in need at the slum.
Amid redevelopment and rising foreign tourism, Nishinari reveals two truths at once: stigma and struggle, but also community and care.
