On October 10, 2025, the Department of History @ubuffalo hosted a New Book celebration for Dr. Ogechukwu Williams' 2025 book with Johns Hopkins University Press. In this video, Dr. Williams provides insights into how this book project unfolded. Prof. Saheed Aderinto of @FloridaInternational, author of When Sex Threatened the State: Illicit Sexuality, Nationalism, and Politics in Colonial Nigeria, provides commentary on the book's significance. Hailed as the first comprehensive history of childbirth in Nigeria and one that fills an important gap in maternal healthcare scholarship, Birth Politics explores the complex relationships between traditional midwives, biomedical maternities, and faith-based birthing homes. It highlights the competing political, cultural, religious, and gender dynamics that these various actors entrench in Nigeria's birthscape.
