Канікули (Kanikuly) - Останні Канікули (Full Album) (USSR/Ukrainian SSR, 1990) (Euro/Synth-Disco)

Ukrainian duo "Канікули / Kanikuly" (meaning "Last Vacation") only recorded one album in 1990 on magnetic tape. The duo consisted of Mykola Pavlov (Микола Павлов), a composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer and Anatoly Krokhmalny (Анатолій Крохмальний), a lyricist and singer.

The album was arranged by Pavlov and recorded at Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv in August 1990. Pavlov composed and arranged several songs for popular artists at the time. I was curious to see what the two are up to nowadays and was able to find them both on Facebook. Mykola also goes by Nick, lives in Kyiv and is still active in the music industry. Anatoly's contact info is set to private, but he makes a lot of posts about Ukrainian
history and likely lives in Ternopil.

Unfortunately, the album never saw the light of day and remains unreleased to this day, the fate of thousands of Soviet-era recordings, becoming a so-called "phantom album". In the USSR, including the Ukrainian SSR, the music industry was controlled by the state, via Melodiya, the state-owned record monopoly. Sadly, the vast majority of these "phantom album" tapes were not stored well and only now exist in low-quality or if high-quality copies are out there, they are in private hands.

Since the available recordings of the songs differ in sound quality, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to restore them to the best of my ability, through de-clicking, adjusting the dynamics, and removing light tape noise. Sadly, I cannot do anything about the vocals, which are way too loud. Unless the master tape is found to be in good condition, there is nothing that can fully restore the album. Still, I wanted to share the album in its entirety.
