Life is full of surprises. My Toyota 3sge beams would not start after internal ring of vvt bolts were removed. I removed the 8 small torx bolts to put a new drysump pump hex drive on the exhaust cam vvt pulley. While we were not looking and away machining the new hex drive, the internal section of the vvt exhaust pulley rotated a quarter of a turn clockwise because the 8 bolts were not in it. It was the valve spring tension that rotated it. What was confusing was the timing marks still lined up on the top cambelt gears and the crank. It was solved when I removed the Rocker cover and found the exhaust cam 1/4 of a turn to far ahead. I removed the 8 bolts from the vvt pulley and rotated the exhaust cam anticlockwise and the internal threaded holes rotated within the vvt pulley past 2 holes within the pcd. Crazy how the cam can turn within the vvt pulley with the bolts out. We'll it took some steadfast logical thinking and help from a local race shop owner to get to the bottom of it. As soon a the clocking of the exhaust cam was correct boom it just started on the key.
