The Old Spanish Trail Monument, San Luis Valley, Del Norte, Colorado

Join our adventure as we travel on U.S. Hwy 160. We make a quick stop at the landform sculpture dedicated to the Old Spanish Trail east of Del Norte, Colorado. The San Luis Valley opens up before you with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains dominating the skyline. Walk around the sculpture showcasing this historic merchant trail which served as a trade route between California and Santa Fe, New Mexico, from 1829 to 1850. Once John C. Fremont brought the Old Spanish Trail to light, it became a popular route for southwest settlers who settled the San Luis Valley in 1859. The monument includes a stone carving of a carreta as well as artistic sculptures highlighting the rich history of the trail. Enjoy our continued adventure across southern Colorado.
