Kolkata to Kankrajhor BikeTrip | Day 2 | Khandarani Dam | Laljol | Ghagra waterfall | Tarafeni Dam

On the second day of Kakrajhor bike trip in October 2020 we visited spots near Belpahari like Laljal Caves, Khandarani Dam, Ghagra Waterfall, Tarafeni Dam. On the previous day we directly came from Kolkata to Kakrajhor and stayed at Mahato Homestay. It was a short but beautiful road trip.
On the way to Laljal Caves we diverted our route through Bagdoba village in anticipation of peacock sighting. However, it was quite late and we were without any luck. But the forest road itself is a pleasure to the eyes. 19 km away from Mahato Homestay and around 68 kms from Jhargram, Laljal area bears the remains of some ancient civilization. It was the living place of the primitive cave man 5000 years back. One has to walk around 200 meters uphill to reach the caves. Some fossils found here by archaeological excavation are kept in the museum. The water in this area is mixed with iron & copper and thus reddish in colour; hence the name ‘Laljal’.
11 km from Belpahari, picturesque Khandarani Dam is located in Jhargram district (Bhulaveda Gram Panchayat, Mouza- Amlasol). The Dam was constructed by Midnapore Zilla Parishad in 1996 to arrest the flow of Khandarani canal flowing through the Gadra Valley and channelize the water for irrigation purpose. The undulating terrain is thickly forested and is a safe heaven for the migratory birds in winter.
About 7 km north of Belpahari in West Midnapore, Ghagra waterfall is situated on Tarafeni River. The river here forms a canyon of black stones with many holes created in stone due to water erosion. The word ‘Ghagra’ originates from ‘Gagra’ meaning ‘Kalas’ (pitcher).
Around 4 kms from Ghagra Waterfall, Tarafeni River Dam is the main source of irrigation and drinking water in the locality. Tarafeni river receives its share of water mainly from Mukutmanipur Dam.
