Inspired by @Unspeakable hydro dipped RC car project we decided to do our own RC car cover custom paint job when Harley smashed his MT10 cover (body... shell... whatever its called) up and we couldn't get hold of a pre painted cover before the weekend...
... turns out this has to be the easiest way to make a truly custom paint job! We have no previous experience painting an RC car and we managed just fine 😜 it only took 2 hours start to finish!!!!
Fun things to do in half term as a family or for yourself as a grown up - make your RC car your own!
We used Core RC scissors to cut out the FTX cover, Core RC paints and Fairy washing up liquid - but any other appropriate RC / plastic paint and any brand of dish soap will do!
We got black for the base, 3 different colours to add the design and white to back the colours - we used white as a first backing to make the colours bright (if we had backed straight to black the colours would have ended up really dark) then we added the black as a final backing colour and it truly gave the car a depth of colour (plus another layer of protection from potential stone chips etc)
Note: make sure that your window stickers are well stuck down between each layer - INCLUDING the addition of the dish soap. Or you end up with surprise unpaintable patches like us! 🤣
Design chosen by @RockstarHarley after watching countless different 'how to paint your RC car' videos on YouTube - this neon splatter look really caught his attention!! As we couldn't get hold of the correct MT10 cover we opted for the next best thing: an FTX cover. It didn't quite fit, took some trimming to get it on... but now I'm looking at it and it just looks so good!!!
Here's how we did it broken down:
Step one: cut the cover to size INCLUDING the holes for the pins to attach it!!!
Step two: clean the shell... thoroughly dry!!
Step three: stick the window protectors on the inside of the body shell - make sure they're well stuck
Step four: create a spray booth - we used paper sheets stuck together with tape then taped to the window. Worked a treat... until I realised it wasnt big enough and I painted the floor. Make it bigger than you think you need. Trust me.
Step five: apply black in 2-3 thin coats - leave to dry ~10-15min between coats! Get the kettle on and watch some @Unspeakable or @kevintalbotrc
Step six: wash off the dish soap - leave to dry or get impatient and use a hairdryer like me.
Step seven: get creative with colours!!! Add a second coat of the colour (obvs yellow on top of yellow etc!!!)
Step eight: add white as a backing colour x2 coats (again... leave to dry or get fully impatient and use hairdryer gently)
Step nine: remove window protector stickers. Curse about overspray.
Step ten: add thin coats of black. Curse at any dish soap left on the windows. Leave to dry.
Step eleven: admire your masterpiece!!
