In this video, we demonstrate how QTrobot, a humanoid expressive robot, plays a pretend play game and asks the kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to imitate a variety of activities and to pretend to be someone else.
Teaching pretend play to children with autism is one of the important steps in helping a child to development social skills, emotional abilities as well as language development skills.
To teach pretend play, the first step is to make sure that the child is fully engaged in the activity and the interaction. To teach pretending to a young child with autism, choosing activities which are fun and engaging is critical and can boost the learning capacity of the learner.
Scientific evaluations show that robots can improve the engagement of children with autism and they show that children with ASD tend to copy robots more often than they copy their human interaction partner. These studies in fact support that social robots can be good tools for helping children with autism to copy other people and to do pretend play.
QTrobot is a little humanoid robot developed to help children with autism spectrum disorder. QTrobot uses it’s expressive face and body movements to engage kids with special need education and teaches a variety of social, emotional and communicational skills, including pretend play and copying.
