Join us on a field day at Los Cristianos Beach (Arona, Tenerife), where the Loro Parque Foundation and researchers from the “Rays of Paradise” project carry out acoustic tagging and release of butterfly rays (Inura altavela), a critically endangered species.
You’ll see the entire protocol: capture, biometric measurements, sample collection, visual tagging, and controlled release.
Project objectives:
✅ Understand the habitat use of butterfly rays
✅ Track their coastal movements
✅ Detect sex-based segregation patterns
✅ Provide data for conservation efforts
Key facts:
💡 Over 140 butterfly rays already tagged in Gran Canaria and Tenerife
💡 Coordinated teams on land, at sea, and veterinary staff
💡 A multidisciplinary approach including genetics and isotopic studies
If you’re interested in marine life, species conservation, or field science, this video shows how a tagging study is conducted step by step.
