I've been writing about an Asian bisexual trying to open a food truck... and I need your help

I've gotten a lot of questions about where I've been for the past year, and I think this video might help answer the question. BUT if you don't know me, or remember me, let me introduce myself.

My name is Maya Hennessey (she/her). I am a senior at DePaul University in Chicago studying Film & Television Production with a concentration in showrunning and a minor in screenwriting. For one of my final projects, I am writing and producing my concept pilot for my show "Truck It!" Truck It is a show I created as my final for my freshmen year business of television class. I absolutely fell in love with the concept and continued to work on it throughout college. Now as a senior, I am in my final showrunning sequence class, and my show got picked to be made! This project is my baby. I believe comedy is one of the best ways to highlight the struggles and joy of life as a queer, POC, young adult. Therefore, I developed this project to mix my love of ensemble sitcoms from the 90s with a more diverse and representational story. It highlights the struggles, joy, romance, and silliness of navigating your early 20s as a queer person of color. In addition, it is a fun challenge to develop these characters since they are inspired by myself and my friends and create a true ensemble sitcom. I hope to produce it into a full television show and only employ queer people of color filmmakers and actors to show that we deserve the chance to be seen and work in the media. I also specifically want to film and write it in Chicago with Chicago workers and writers since this story is about a Chicago ensemble.

This show is for queer people of color who are navigating their early 20s.
I want LGBTQIA+ young adults who are also people of color to watch my show and relate, laugh, cry, and feel seen. Queer joy is so rarely depicted on television, and although my characters are experiencing financial troubles, issues with their family, and low self-esteem they have created a found family which is something many queer, POC, young adults experience. This project is inspired by my life, my friends and their stories. My protagonist PJ is an exaggerated version of myself inspired by the many amazing Asian men and women I’ve met in college. Furthermore, I am a queer Asian American in my 20s, and this is a show for those people.

My story also shows a variety of characters with many intersectionalities. Parker James Li is a heavy-set, third generation Asian American who is bisexual. His main love interest is a transgender black man who identifies as gay but also comes from a wealthy family. His other love interest is an adopted Chinese American with two white dads, while his childhood best friend is a demisexual Mexican American man. I wanted to show a diverse cast with many different backgrounds.
