This is a short clip about visiting a high terrace above the Yellowstone Valley east of Billings, Montana. It is a tableland composed of gravel with pebbles and cobbles deposited by a river about 2 million years ago. But not the Yellowstone River. Deposited instead by the ancient Shoshone River that used to flow from the Absaroka Mountains to Billings, a route that shifted abruptly to its present course that flows into the Bighorn River about 100 miles to the south! This gravel composition reflects its Absaroka volcanic provenance.
