Fixing a Flat Tire in the Dark – Bear Country | ACT Romania Day 2 (S2/Ep27)

After yesterday’s detours we still had 260 km left to finish Day 2 of the ACT Romania track.
The day started slow—our tents were soaked and I insisted on waiting until everything dried. By the time we finally packed up and hit the trail it was late, but spirits were high.
The morning brought smooth riding, a cozy pastry stop at a little patisserie, and for a while everything felt perfect. By 6 p.m. we had only 64 km left. Totally doable… or so I thought.

Then the track changed its mind.
On one section the rear of my bike suddenly kicked left and right—something was wrong. I stopped and saw the rear tire had slipped off the rim. A nail had punctured the tube.
It was my first flat tire ever, and of course it happened in the forest, around 7 p.m., with darkness coming fast and bears known to roam these woods.

We unpacked tools, hearts pounding. Luckily Jeroen was with me. He’d done this before and calmly guided me through every step.
Together, using my Roia Moto and Eastbound gear, we replaced the tube as the light faded completely. Every cracking branch made my imagination run wild—was it just the forest settling, or something watching us? I didn’t want to find out.

As soon as the wheel was back on I hurried to throw everything into my bags—no perfect packing, just get out. Jeroen started his bike to make some noise while I tightened the last bolts.
Finally we rolled out of the woods and into a nearby village. A last-minute Booking.com reservation saved the night.
By 10:30 p.m. we reached a warm guesthouse—a perfect ending to a nerve-wracking evening.

Sometimes adventure isn’t about the distance you cover, but the problems you overcome and the friends who help you through it.
